The best documentary film for 2006 and the winner of the „Goya Award“ was conceived as early as back in 1986, after the congress
in Barcelona organized by the most renown names of Catalonian ilm and who have iniated the debate about the protection of film
and the authors’ rights of filmmakers. The congress resulted in a manifesto signed by more than five hundred international directors,
lead by Francis Ford Copolla.
The manifesto requested film to be shown in its true and original form, according to the creation of its
author, without changes and commercial requirements by large distribution companies.
“During the signing of the manifesto, the initiator of the project and of the idea about protection of the authors, Fred Zineman, came
to me and told me: ‘We have to make a ilm about this.’ When I asked him: ‘Do you want it to be a documentary or a feature ilm?’ he
said: ‘Half-half’. That is how this unique testimony by several great names of international ilm was created, including Woody Allen,
Sidney Polack, Eliot Silverstein, Milos Forman and who were the top people of the American Film Association “Director’s Hill” and very
active in protectiong ilm and the rights of its authors and at the same time signatories of the manifesto.
The film shows first hand the
most important moments and impressions of these participants of the congress in Barcelona, as well as the testimonies of authors
who were the victims of a media manipulation and pressure of ilm magnates”.
Asked how he was feeling and what had changed in his life after the Goya Award – the Spanish Oscar – Carlos Benpar said: “This
award makes me very happy because it is awarded by the biggest names from the world of ilm, which means they have recognized
its importance. Has my life changed after this award? It has. The owner of the house in which I live called me to raise the rent!
